Captain Cook 1770 Festival – May

This multi-award winning festival has been running in 1770 and Agnes Water for over 20 years. The weekend commemorates the landing of Captain James Cook and his ship the HMB Endeavour back in 1770 (the year after which the town is named). 1770 was the site of the first Queensland landing for Captain Cook and his crew, and was only their second Australian landing. The family orientated festival also has a strong focus on promoting and educating people about the local indigenous cultures that have lived in the area for thousand of years. The Gooreng Gooreng people are the traditional owners of the land and perform dance, songs and stories throughout the festival, which are a great way to learn more about our countries indigenous history. One of the major drawcards of the festival is the re-enactment of James Cook’s first landing where you are taken back over 200 years to relive this important moment in Australian history, with a detailed and authentic re-enactment taking place during the festival. The weekend also boasts a long list of world-class entertainment, music, arts and delicious international food stalls. 2016 Dates are 20-22nd May.
